June Rollins' watercolor: view From My Window A Note From Rob ...
Week of Feb. 8

Isaiah 40:31 reads, “…those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

When I read this several things jump out at me. The first is “those who wait for the Lord." I have known people who wait, sometimes they wait for the Lord but more often than not folks either don’t wait at all or they do not wait with any expectation upon the Lord. The “doers” get about doing and the rest passively wait for something to happen. Active and expectant waiting seems to be rare.

The next is a promise of power. However, it is a particular kind of power. For the lack of a better term, I will call it cooperative power. It is power seen through the individual or group of people. The scripture says, “Those who wait have their strength renewed and they soar. They have strength, endurance and perseverance that are beyond our human abilities.”

Often we cry to the Lord for strength, endurance, perseverance in life’s challenges. We want to soar above the mundane and ordinary, like the majestic eagles. Most often it is due to a personal desire, need or crisis. While there doesn’t seem anything wrong with such petitions, if that is the extent of our cries for strength and deliverance and our quest for soaring, we have missed the real possibility in this relationship with God and God’s power.

It seems we really begin to grasp the love, power and presence of God through our relationship with the Holy. We listen to God’s call to follow and serve. Such a following will leave any mortal tired. But the promise is that in the expectant waiting for the next opportunity we are nourished, strengthened and raised to new heights.

Want to soar? Don’t hitch your wagon to a star but your life to a savior. I hope to see you Sunday.
