June Rollins' watercolor: view From My Window A Note From Rob ...
Week of March 15

Frank Lloyd Wright has been credited with the quote, “Form follows function.” However, what he actually said is, “You have heard it said that ‘form follows function’- that is been misunderstood. Form and Function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.” He was speaking of architecture. The use, or function, of the space drives the design of it. The building’s design and its use are to be one.

Below is a picture of the design of the Temple in Jerusalem during Jesus’ time. It was from this temple that Jesus ran the money changers in our Gospel lesson this week. When you look at it, how are form and function wed?

Think about our worship space. What does its design say about its function? Take a look at the entire facility. What does the building say about what our priorities?

One of the questions often asked of successful and struggling business in order to stay current is, “What is your business”? The next is, “How is business”? It is easy for a business or a church to lose sight of what is the “function” of the organization and get lost in things that do not help achieve that main objective.

It seems important for a church, any church, our church to ask this of Jesus, “What is our business?” It is important to ask him because it is his church. He is the head. Then he may have a question of us: “How is business?”

It is my prayerful hope that our function and form may be joined in a Spiritual union with Jesus, the head of the Church, as we are about the Father’s business.

     Hope to see you Sunday!
