Week of May 17

By now you probably have heard about the exciting new possibility we have coming to Anson County. I am going to highlight some of the things of interest.

  • Anson County a pilot site for General Board of Global Missions (GBGM) of United Methodist Church emphasis on poverty in 2008-2012 .Yadkin/Wilkes is the other site in Western NC Conference.
  • Hands of Hope and First UMC have been instrumental in bringing this to fruition.
  • We anticipate becoming a training center for the Southeastern United States.
  • A United Methodist missionary will be assigned to assist with this program.
  • Funding will come from outside sources and grants. Church will provide space and other support from volunteers.
  • Program selected by community wide assessment group as a priority need in Anson County.
  • Community Wide participation is critical for success.
  • Bridges out of Poverty Seminar held June 6, 2009 at Lockhart Taylor.
  • Circles Model used; see www.movethemountain.org
  • Based on Dr. Ruby Payne’s Framework for Understanding poverty.
  • Summer 2009 staff hired and preliminary work begins.
  • First Getting Ahead class of 10-15 participants begins in fall 2009.
  • Other sites show for each $1.00 spent: $2.00 is saved from public assistance and $4.00 goes into the local economy.
  • Based on ministry with the poor not to the poor. It is relational.
  • Based on Biblical model and the life and teachings of Jesus.
  • In response to Western NC Conference emphasis: To Follow Jesus, Make Disciples, Transform the World.
As your pastor and fellow Ansonian, I believe this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us. This movement has the potential to impact Anson County in a powerful way. I think we are blessed with support from the General Board of Global Missions, the WNC Conference, the Albemarle District and many others who are joining with us as we undertake this important work.

I believe we are standing looking at our future. In many respects, like the Israelites as they stood on the threshold of this promised future. I honestly believe God has brought us to this point and will lead us into the future.

Please join me in prayer and passion to address the issue of poverty in our community. In so much as we do it unto these, we do it unto Jesus.     I hope to see you Sunday.
