A Note From Rob ...
Week of May 24
This Sunday is Ascension Sunday, the Sunday before Pentecost. Our New Covenant lesson deals with
how the replacement for Judas was chosen. Matthias was the one chosen. Do you know the one not
chosen? His name is Justus.
I’ve been thinking a bit about him these past few days. I wondered how he might have felt being first
loser, as many call coming in second. Did Justus just pick up his toys and witness and leave because he
was not chosen? Somehow, I don’t think he did. How about working to be sure Matthias had a difficult
time in his newly elected position? I can’t see it happening. Maybe he just faded into the background
until his chance came again. What do you think? Maybe Justus just gave up.
What do you think Justus did when he was not chosen? He would not be the first in the Church or a
church to pack up his toys and go home because another person or way was chosen. Maybe he took a
group of his closest friends and started their own fellowship.
What one does when winning or not winning reveals volumes about one’s character and commitment.
You see, I think Justus remained faithful to his witness. I believe he did so because his commitment was
to Jesus and not a position.
I hope to see you Sunday at the commitment place.
