A Note From Rob ...
Week of July 19, 2009
Some of you may have noticed that this article places a context for the coming Sunday’s worship, when
possible. That means when I have had the time to reflect, pray, study and consider how God is leading; in short,
when I have taken time to listen.
Take time to listen. I wish that was not the case. I wish somehow in the way life is constructed, time
would be a gift. I wish in the vast scheme of things time to do what is necessary was just granted. What if it is and
we just don’t choose to accept the gift?
Several years and a lifetime ago I taught salesmen something called time management. Early on we
discussed whether time could be managed. Is it possible to arrange time? The answer is yes and no. However, in
order to effectively do so we need to begin somewhere else. In order to be good stewards of the gift of time,
priority setting is critical. In reality, the discipline should be called Priority Management and not Time
Management.
This week’s Gospel lesson from Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 has Jesus taking his disciples to a deserted place,
someplace others have abandoned for more appealing locations. You might call it God forsaken; a wilderness.
Rather than tell you about the text and direction of the sermon and worship service this week, I want to
ask you just to read the Gospel lesson. May I suggest a way to do that?
- Find a place and time in your day where you will not be disturbed.
- Read it very slowly once through. Think about what you read in silence.
- Read it two more times and be still after each reading to an appropriate time.
- Do this every day until we gather for worship this Sunday.
- If you can not or choose not to worship this Sunday, do it again on Sunday.
I look forward to hearing about how this experience was for you. Until then, wish you…
God’s Presence,
