June Rollins' watercolor: view From My Window A Note From Rob ...
Week of August 23, 2009

I have observed the debate over Creationism, the Big Bang Theory and Evolution with some interest. But not as you might expect. I have an opinion on what should be taught in our schools but again, no comment. I don’t think this is the forum for that discussion. However, I do think this is the forum to discuss why the creation story is in the Bible.

It is no accident that the Bible begins as it does. Can’t remember? Look it up. I’ll wait. Did you notice what the focus of the first sentence was? If you said the beginning you are partially right. If that is partially right then the rest, and most important is the primary actor in creation at the beginning.

Another important implicit reality is that God was before the beginning and creation. No one and nothing made God. God pre-existed everything that we see as concrete and physical.

While we hold these as theological, philosophical and empirical truths, they are at the beginning of the Bible. The Bible was not ever intended to be a textbook for a science class. It is a story of God’s relationship with creation, the relationship between the creatures and creatures and a story about the relationship the creatures have with God and creation.

Science may prove the 6 day 24 hour theory one day. Right now it looks improbable. Science may find many explanations about how we got to this point. That is not the area of concern for the Bible. The Bible is not concerned with How but Who. Who are we to each other and Who is the primary actor in life.

The creation narrative is about God who was the One who brought order from chaos, life from nothing and community to a globe. In the beginning God...

I hope to see you Sunday.
