A Note From Rob ...
Week of October 18, 2009
Homecoming is a special time. I recall as a child loving the day of celebration. The dinner on the
grounds was my favorite and still is! I also enjoyed the pastors who returned to a church where they were
a pastor or member. I look forward to sharing friendship with Glenn for almost 30 years as you share one
even longer with him. Other memories centered on the former friends and members who came back and
the singing afterward. All in all, it was a full day.
In many of the churches I have known, Homecoming was one of the best attended and happiest
days of the church year. As I have grown older my love for sharing good times gone by has diminished
with the realization that the past may have more attraction than the future. I know that seems to be true as
the percentage of my years is greater in what I have lived than what I will live. My recent birthday only
reinforced that reality.
Then I look around to the children. This Sunday look around at those who will one day speak of
their childhood memories. What will they be? How will Homecoming look 50 years from now at First
UMC, Wadesboro?
This Sunday I will reflect on the past and in so doing give thanks for those who gave me a future
some 50 years ago. I will also look in the faces of those whose future I am building today. I hope it will be
a good one.
