June Rollins' watercolor: view From My Window A Note From Rob ...
Week of December 13, 2009

The theology of the music of the Christmas season has been on my mind for a while. I’m not talking about the religious music but the secular vein. For example, what possible theological message might be communicated with these words?

“I’m getting ‘nuttin’ for Christmas, Mommy and Daddy are mad,
I’m getting ‘nuttin’ for Christmas, ‘cause I ain’t been nuttin’ but bad.
I won’t be seein’ Santa Claus, somebody snitched on me.
He won’t come to visit me because somebody snitched on me.
Next year I’ll be going straight. Next year I’ll be good, just wait,
I’d start now, but it’s too late, Somebody snitched on me.”
     Or how about these,
“You better watch out, you better not cry,
you better not pout I’m tellin’ you why, Santa Claus is coming to town...
He knows if you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake!”
Maybe you have heard of tales of good boys and girls getting fine presents and bad girls and boys getting coal and sticks. All seem to be pointing to the same conclusion. Good gets good and bad results in its corresponding reward.

Aside from the obvious behavior modification that may result in households as December 25 approaches, are the messages applicable? May they be applied to our understanding of God? Do they fit with any passages of Scripture? I think they might.

What do you think? The next two weeks we will be reading from the Luke 1:39-55 and Luke 3:7-18.

What do you think? Luke ends the passage about John the Baptist with these words, “So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people.”

I hope to see you Sunday at the good news place.
