A Note From Rob ...
Week of January 17, 2010
If I were to go on the street with a TV camera to do a documentary on Baptism and asked this question, “What is
Baptism,” I would get many answers. Some of the answers might have regional differences; some might be based
on a faith stance or denominational doctrine, some of the differences would be based on study and some on
feelings. But there would be differences. We might have some different opinions among a congregation.
This Sunday we will have part of the salvation drama lived our before us. It will have some key ingredients we will
be able to see. This is what we will see. A child will be brought to the waters of grace in the Baptismal font. This is
a statement of our coming to God in weakness and in grace and by grace we are brought to baptism.
It speaks to the need for sharing the story of salvation, one person and perhaps one generation to another.
It asserts that God is acting in the life of the child in visible and unseen ways. It acknowledges that God is the most
important and primary actor and parents, child and congregations are secondary and respond to God’s grace,
invitation and power.
Later in our service we will be able to claim or reclaim that which was done in and through our baptisms in an act
of remembrance of our baptism.
I want to extend a special invitation to all to be a part of this drama as it is played out in our midst, our
congregation.
I hope to see you there.
