The title of Sunday’s sermon and the question it asks is this, “Is love a noun or a verb”?

In consulting Webster’s dictionary I confirmed the answer is love is both a noun and a verb. Most of us know that because we have been in love and have been loved.

Paul writes in his letter to the church at Corinth of the nature of love specifically, agapé which is translated as love. One of the problems we have understanding what Paul meant when he spoke of love is that is love is bantered about in such a haphazard manner that it seems to have lost the meaning Paul intended.

Love seems to have become a sentiment that an individual feels. The entire function of love is to make one feel something or to express a great affection one has for something. We speak of being in love, a euphoric state. We love pizza and people as long as they suit our tastes.

I would suggest that is not the kind of love Paul called us to embrace. In preparation for Sunday’s worship, please read I Corinthians chapter 13. Read is as if Love was a verb. Place in the backdrop the kind of love Jesus showed as he lived.

I would love to see you Sunday!!
