A Note From Rob ...
We have been looking at the Lord’s Prayer these past several weeks. This week we will consider the phrase,
“Forgive us our debts and we forgive those who are indebted to us.”
Our version says, “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us.” The
translations may speak of sins, offenses, debts, trespasses and perhaps even more offenses. However, the bottom
line meaning is still the same. God, forgive me as I forgive others.
Several years ago we were discussing this part of the Lord’s Prayer and an attorney who specialized in
bankruptcy was in the class. He said in bankruptcy court when the judge enters there is a pronouncement of,
“All debtors rise” and the whole courtroom stands.
It is a reminder of the fact that we all owe someone something. In a very real sense we might begin our worship
with the words, “All sinners rise” or “All sinners kneel.”
The very fact that we pray the prayer is an acknowledgement of out need to forgive and be forgiven.
I hope you will join us this Sunday as we gather to forgive and be forgiven.
