A Note from Rob ...
The last Sunday of the liturgical Church year is Christ the King Sunday. The following Sunday begins a new cycle as
we begin the season of Advent. This year’s text comes from Luke and is a scene from Jesus’ crucifixion.
Above Jesus’ head as he hung on the cross was a rude homemade plaque that read, “King of the Jews.” It was made by
Roman soldiers and was more of a joke than a proclamation, at least from the Roman perspective.
Being King of the Jews for them was more like being King Marionette or King Pooper Scooper. The King just danced
to the tune of Rome and was considered a joke by those who thought they held the real power.
This scene is more about what Jesus’ real reign was and how that might become a reality. I encourage you to read
Luke 23:33-43 in preparation for our worship this Sunday.
Notice the different names given to Jesus and how Jesus is seen by the different people. Then join me in asking a
question of ourselves. How do we as individuals and as a Church see Jesus?
I hope to celebrate the Kingship of Jesus this Sunday with you, loyal subjects of our King!
