New Beginnings

HISTORY

New Beginnings is a support group for cancer survivors and their friends and family that meets monthly for a meal, program and fellowship.

The need for a support group was apparent to Dr. Al Joyner, former FUMC pastor, who worked with the Healthy Ansonians' Parish Nurse Program to initiate the project. Cynthia Furr, Director of the Parish Nurse Ministry, Margaret Lowe, FUMC's Parish Nurse, and Sharon Helms, American Cancer Society, accepted the task of reaching the hundreds of cancer survivors in Anson County. Special thanks go to Margaret for all the telephone contacts she made while recovering from a leg injury.

After a few months, the group was asked to take ownership of the organization. Brian Brauns was elected 2004 president; Sandy Bruney, secretary and newsletter; and Ross Hendley, chaplain.

In 2005, Peggy Morris succeeded Brian, and Ross and Sandy were re-elected. Because of the group's steady growth, it became clear that other officers were necessary. Hubert Wright was elected vice president and Debbie Wright, treasurer. Marty Smith and Foye Ray agreed to act as program co-chairmen.

When our "chief chefs," Al and Gaynelle Joyner, were appointed to another church, the group tried several avenues of ensuring a meal. After some trial and error, it was decided to depend on the tried-and-true covered dish format. Donations are accepted to help defray expenses to the church of paper goods, heat, lights, etc.

While under the Parish Nurse umbrella, New Beginnings is primarily a ministry of First United Methodist Church.

2009 officers are: Hubert Wright, president; Mack Davis, vice president; Debbie Wright, treasurer; Sandy Bruney, secretary/newsletter; Marty Smith, programs; and Sissy Hendley, decorations.
