NOTES of INTEREST
|
If you are looking for a loving, caring church home, First United Methodist Church is open! For information about becoming a part of this congregation, please contact Rob or the church office.

On April 20, we received Gene and Becky Dill into our church family. They transferred from Firwood United Methodist Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. They reside in Polkton.
On April 13, Caroline and Steve Yakubik joined by transfer from the Roman Catholic Church in Pennsylvania. They reside in Morven.

Congratulations to Arthur and Jo Summers on the birth of their granddaughter, Gracie Lynn Dorazio. Gracie was born April 17. She is the daughter of Amanda and Bobby Dorazio of Fredericksburg, Va., and the granddaughter of Chuck and Lynn Summers, also of Fredericksburg. |
A Special Thursday's Child Mission Project
Thursday's Child, our Community Children's Choir, has been an outreach ministry of First UMC for several years. This year, the Choir is undertaking a mission project themselves, as an outreach to the children of the world. They are participating in Heifer International, a program to provide chickens, geese, sheep, goats, cows and other necessities for families to be able to support themselves.
Thursday's Child has already collected over $200.00 through their own donations, and would greatly appreciate support for this from all of us. Their goal is to be able to send as many animals as possible -- maybe even a water buffalo! -- to children and families in Third World Countries. This is a great opportunity for them to become a part of world missions, and also for the church to support missions and Thursday's Child. Donations may be made through the church office or marked in the Sunday offering.
Update:On April 6, Rob challenged the congregation to raise enough money to buy an Ark, which will require $5,000.00. If we can raise $2,500.00, the Gates Foundation will match that amount and our goal will be accomplished. We have also had a challenge by an anonymous member of the congregation to raise enough extra money to provide a pig, reflecting the growing number of pig farms in North Carolina. The next $120.00 that is given, designated for the pig, will be matched by the challenger, and we will be able to send two extra pigs!
Update! As of April 30, a total of $2,070.00 has been raised toward our goal of $2,475.

Organ Renovation Project
Several months ago, the Administrative Council authorized the creation of an Organ Renovation Fund for the future renovation of the pipe organ in the sanctuary. The organ was installed in 1965, and has served faithfully over the past 43 years. It is, however, becoming evident that there are some major repairs that will have to be made fairly soon. The "mechanical" parts of the organ are deteriorating to the point of not functioning correctly, resulting in some unexpected and unwelcome surprises on Sunday morning and other times! Also, there are great advances in pipe organ electronics over the last four decades which we hope to incorporate into the organ.
As part of the project, we also hope to add a few digital voices to blend with the traditional pipe voices; this is a common practice in organ renovation, allowing some additions at a fraction of the expense of traditional pipework. We are in conversation with several experts in the field of organ renovation at the present time.
Our Moller organ is an exceptionally fine instrument, worthy of our stewardship to preserve it for many future generations. Contributions to the fund are welcome at any time.

OPPORTUNITIES
- It is time to begin the scholarship application process. All First UMC students who will be furthering their education this coming fall are urged to make application for funds. The applications are in the church office and the deadline for applying is June 15.
- Knick-Knacks for Sale! The furnishings committee has made several items from the parlors available to the congregation. These decorative items are pictured on the bulletin board above the water fountain in the education hall; prices were determined after consultation with a local antique dealer. Anything remaining after May 15 will be offer on eBay to the general public. All proceeds will go to the Parsonage Fund.
- Clean-Up Project: Ebea Hobgood, Jim Bruney, Gene Dill and Anna Baucom are sorting through church "treasures" and would like to find some more! If you have any old papers, old bulletins, Sunday School records, or anything else that might be of interest to the church archives, we would love to have you consider donating your finds to the church to be preserved as part of our story. (Anything that we might not need, which is unlikely, will be returned to you if you desire.) You can drop items off at the church library where the work is taking place, or bring to one of the offices and they will be directed to the right place. Thanks in advance for anything that you might share with your church familyl.
Also, we have some note cards and postcards of the old church that are available for sale in the education hall for the organ renovation.
- The Flower Calendar for 2008 is posted in the education hall. Flowers for worship may be given in memory or honor of someone or to observe a special occasion. Please sign up for the dates you would like to reserve.
- United Methodist Women have sponsored the ministry of Meals for Bereaved Families. The committees have lost several members over the past few years and are in need of being reorganized. If you would be willing to help with this ministry, please contact Elsie Potter or the church office. Men and women are needed, and you do not have to be a member of UMW to participate. Please consider helping with this important ministry of the UMW and our church.
REMINDER: When you give a memorial or honor gift to the church, please indicate on the check or note which fund you want your gift to go to. If not designated in writing, it will go to where the family has indicated or to the Beautification and Improvement fund, in accordance with the memorial gift policy.
- The Administrative Council has authorized the creation of two new memorial funds. The first is the Sanctuary Painting Fund, to prepare for the future painting and upkeep of the sanctuary. The second is the Organ Renovation Fund, to have money available for the rebuilding of the organ within the next few years. These funds are now open for gifts as memorials or honorariums.
- We need volunteers to assist in keeping the church nursery on Sunday. According to our policy, two adults are needed in the nursery at all time. Marissa Hardison is the regular attendant; if you can help please let the office know.
- Please check the list you were mailed to see if you are scheduled to be an usher or a greeter during the month. If you cannot serve, please call someone else on the list to arrange for a substitute. Users should call Elwood Green if you cannot serve; all others use the list.

NO BOUNDARIES Upcoming trips
No Boundaries trips are always open to all church members until spaces are filled. Signup sheets are located in the hall next to the Education Parlor.

ONGOING
Ongoing funds -- the Life Line fund, Food Collection program and the TV ministry -- are still in operation. These are active ministries totally funded outside of the church budget. Please continue your support of these extensions of our ministry into the community.
We are still recycling used printer cartridges to support the TV ministry. Any cartridge about the size of the palm of your hand or smaller may be recycled. You may also send the ink cartridges individually using the postage paid mailers on the table in the hall. The church will be credited automatically for any that you send.
